George Romans dropped by local side

From the Citizen, 30th October 1948

Writing to “W.B.” Mr G Westle of Birmingham recalls the time when George Romans was left out of a local side.

“When I left the City in the middle of 1896 I had had many enjoyable games because of being a member of the then Gloucester St George side” he writes. “This was a team led by Mr W A Thomas as captain, and George Romans was in its three-quarter line. I remember going on one occasion to play Newent, a particularly potent side in those days, and though we were one or two short we succeeded in playing them to a draw – no score.

“I well remember this game because it had been thought well (by the St George selectors) to omit George Romans from the side. Just imagine it, omitting the one who afterwards was considered good enough to be deputy to the great Gamlin as England’s full-back!”
