Nieppe near Armentieres 13th April 1915

Ten Gloucester players, including England forward and future Gloucester international Sid Smart, played for the 48th (South Midland) Division XV against the 4th Division on 13th April 1915. The match took place at Nieppe near Armentieres behind the lines on the Franco-Belgian border.

The 48th Division were captained by Ronald Poulton of Harlequins and Oxford University, the current England captain, who was killed by a sniper’s bullet in Ploegsteert Wood just three weeks later. Two of his ten Gloucester team mates were killed later in the war.

The opposition, who included two future presidents of the Irish RFU and England and Scotland internationals, were beaten 17-0.
