  • Great to hear from J V Smith. My late father was at Marling School with him, one day the rugby side from the school had an away match v Crypt grammar. On return the team arrived back at Stroud Station with the headmaster Mr Carter being on the platform. J V was the skipper and he asked him how did it go. ” we lost sir” said J V, ” little surprising with clots like Cullimore ( my late dad) on the wing” ! My Dad’s cousins Godfrey and Martin both played for Stroud, both captains of the team. Godfrey was chairman of the County selectors for a long time, and a RFU rep. Would be good to get an interview with the Fidlers on here, father and son who both played for Eng. John played in 9 County finals which I believe is a record. Keep up the good work, regards, Tom Cullimore

  • Good to listen to ‘JV’ reminiscing about not only Gloucester but Cheltenham and Stroud as well. I do not know whether my Dad (Dai Walter) ever told me but JV relates that the first match he saw as a child was at Kingsholm when Dad was sent off playing for Chelt at Kingsholm. I can’t imagine that that was a very pleasant experience walking the breadth of the pitch to get off.
