This was a John Player Cup third round game.  Peter Butler, who had just left the Gloucester club was in the Lydney team.  There were further ex-Gloucester players in Brian Vine, John Saville, Colin Price, Paul Howell, Gordon Sargent and Allan Brooks.  They ran Sale very close only losing late on.  Lydney had entered the competition at the second round stage, and beat Maidenhead 26-7 away.
