1900(-ish)

The front and back covers of what’s reputed to be one of the earliest programmes still in existence, dating from the early 1900s, were reproduced in a 1991 programme, on the occasion of a match between Gloucester and the Irish President’s XV. It was billed as “A Comic Football Match”, and the aliases against the players’ names certainly reflect a degree of lightheartedness.

  • I have a copy of the “Official” programme for the jubilee Match Capt Donne’s XV v Gloucester played on 13 November 1924 and would be willing to donate it. Gloucester won 11-9 according to that night’s Citizen!
