Arthur Hudson

Lived for Gloucester Rugby
By Malc King

Arthur Hudson was born, bred, played, lived and died in Gloucester. He did not start playing rugby until his 20s, but then made a real impact as a powerful wing, whose high-stepping action made him particularly hard to bring down. He scored 235 tries for Gloucester in 260 matches, captained the county team, and won 8 caps for England, scoring 4 tries in one match against France in Paris. He then served the club loyally as official (secretary and treasurer) and supporter, later in life being dubbed as “the Grand Old Man of Gloucester Rugby”.

My grandfather, Ern Hall, played as a 3/4 alongside Arthur in the 1905/6 record scoring Gloucester team and during Arthur's record try scoring season 1904/05. My uncle (now 93) recalls Ern saying that although Arthur got the tries - 'who gave him the ball?'! Ern also managed 13 tries in 04/05 and 20 tries in 05/06 - they must have been a joy to watch. My father, Ern junior (now 92) recalls meeting Arthur when Arthur ran his outfitters in Gloucester.
