George Halford

By Malc King

Jonathan George Halford (often spelt as Holford) was born 1st July 1886, and attended Linden School in Gloucester. He enjoyed a long rugby career with Gloucester, which was severely disrupted by WW1. He was a lock forward who played from 1908-23, and made 320 appearances for the club. He captained the club immediately before WW1 in the 1913-14 season, when he appeared for England v the South in a trial game, but failed to win a cap that season. WW1 then intervened, but he retained the captaincy when the club resumed fixtures in 1919-20, and won 2 caps for England - against Wales at Swansea on 17th January 1920, and against France at Twickenham a fortnight later. Although he again played for England in a trial game against the North in 1921-22, he won no further caps.
