Tom Millington

By Dick Williams

Tom Millington providing sterling service to the Club over the years 1919 - 1927. He captained the side during the 1923-24 season, but although he attained County and International trial honours, he failed to gain an England cap.

He played at centre three-quarter, outside half and full-back, and according to The Citizen "in all positions displayed a skill and resource that placed him high amongst the best players in the country". It was further suggested that perhaps his most successful period was in partnership with W. Dix at half-back, with the brilliant work of the pair being fundamental to the victories obtained by Gloucestershire in the County Championship.

Over the course of his career he scored a total of 717 points for the Club, chiefly through his goal-kicking, and his record of 154 points in the 1921-22 season was at the time a record for the Club.

He was a favourite target for TEEK, The Citizen cartoonist, to feature in his weekly observations - see below.

At the end of his playing days he continued to serve as players’ representative on the Committee, and also did some useful coaching.
