In 1978 Gloucester fielded the same fifteen players in all five rounds of the John Player Cup on their way to a 6-3 win over Leicester in the final.

The team was: Peter Butler (fullback), Bob Clewes and Richard Mogg (wings), Richard Jardine and Brian Vine (centres), Chris Williams (outside half), Paul Howells (scrum half), Gordon Sargent and Mick Burton (props), Steve Mills (hooker), Steve Boyle and John Fidler (locks) and John Watkins, John Simonett and Viv Wooley (back row).

The team contained eight internationals, two of them British Lions.  Only two players, Williams and Simonett, were not products of Gloucestershire rugby.
