Administrative Career
By Malc King
Hubert ‘Jimmy’ Boughton played for the Club in its very first match against the College (King’s School) in 1873. He soon embarked on a distinguished playing career for the Club and was captain 1883-85.
He also captained Gloucester Cricket Club and also immersed himself in sports administration earning the title of ‘father of sport in the City’.
He became treasurer of the Club in 1879 and helped with the acquisition of a section of the Castle Grim estate in Kingsholm which became the home of Gloucester Rugby. He became the Clubs first President in 1891.
Boughton was also central to the initial organisation of rugby at county level – in 1878, the Gloucester County Football Club was formed by members of the Gloucester club, led by Boughton and he became its first Chairman.
When this was superseded by the County Union in 1890, Boughton was unanimously elected as the President. In 1897, he became the first county representative on the RFU committee.
