Safeguarding the Amateur Game
By Malc King
During the 1936/7 season, “Bumps” Carpenter, the Gloucester hooker, played his 50th match for the County. His record included 5 appearances for Gloucestershire in a County Championship Final, of which 4 were won. The Citizen suggested that a photograph and illuminated address might be presented to “Bumps” to mark this outstanding achievement, but it would have to be procured within the £2 limit set down by the Rugby Union, and even then would require their approval.
