How others saw us

Extract taken from notes in the match programme Cardiff v. Gloucester 6th April 1974:

Gloucester, our visitors today, have not played on the Arms Park since September 3rd, 1969. The home games last season and the season before were cancelled due to the pitch being unfit for play. The only game in 1970-71 we lost at Kingsholm 6-15 and in 1969-70 we won at home 22-3. The overall record reads

P. 155   W. 105   L. 34   D.18

Nothing is more certain than this redoubtable West Country Club whose players form the backbone of the CountyChampionship winning side will fully test our lads today. They have an uncompromising approach to Rugby Football, which allows few frills, and is very effective particularly against Welsh sides, whom they seem to relish in mopping up. Although it must be said they are not quite as formidable away from the cauldron of Kingsholm, as they are in front of their own crowd.
