An extract from the Gloucester Journal, Saturday 29 March,1879:
“A football match between the Gloucester and Rockleaze clubs was played in the Downs, Clifton, on Saturday [22 March]. The weather was bitterly cold, rendering it extremely difficult for the backs to feel the ball, while the wind was so high as on one occasion to blow the ball bounding across the Downs and over the cliffs about 150 yards from the field of play.”
