Memories of H. G. Wells

I have vivid memories of Henry Wells, a Gloucester player from the 1950’s. He was skipper of the Bacavians 2nd XV at Stevenage in the 1960’s when I first starting playing rugby, we were more scared of crossing him than facing the opposition! I have many incidents to recount, including him being locked in the back of a police van for the remainder of one game!
There is a story of him being selected for an England trial whilst at Gloucester, and being sent off; something that almost never happened in those days. Could you verify that story?

  • Hi David – I’ll ask our statsman, who has very comprehensive records of all who have played for Gloucester’s First Team, and substantial but incomplete records for Untied. I’ll e-mail you separately when I hear back from him.
