When Bad Language was frowned upon.

The Gloucester Journal, on Saturday, October 8,1887, had the following negative comments resulting from a trial match at the Spa, between the First XV and the Next XVIII.

“One other feature we noted with sorrow. Occasionally unparliamentary language was wafted across to the spectators, and the use of it is strongly to be deprecated as totally unnecessary and unworthy [of] athletes and sportsmen.”
