Day, Tom

Tom Day made 236 appearances for Gloucester at prop between 1938 and 1951, despite missing six years of his playing career due to World War II. He captained the club in 1950-51 and played for Gloucestershire and Western Counties. In retirement, he was a leading administrator in club and county rugby, serving as  President of Gloucestershire RFU in 1976-77, as a Gloucestershire selector for a number of years and as Chairman and President of Gloucester.

Sidney Thomas “Tom” Day was born in Gloucester in 1914. He made his debut for Gloucester in 1938-39,   replacing Cyril Harris at prop and played 19 games in his first season. During World War II he played rugby for Rotol.

In 1945-46 (the first post war season) he played 29 games for Gloucester (the most of any player). The following season 1946-47 was his most successful. He made his debut for Gloucestershire, playing through the season which culminated in a drawn County Championship Final against Lancashire. Tom also played for Western Counties against the Australian tourists and was a reserve for the final England trial that season.

Tom Day played for Gloucestershire in County Championship semi-finals in 1947-48 and 1948-49 and captained Gloucester in 1950-51, which was to be his final season.

After retirement he served as a Gloucestershire selector and was President of Gloucestershire RFU in 1976-77. He was one of four Gloucester Vice Presidents in their centenary season of 1973-74, served as Chairman for several years and as President in the first season of the professional era.
